Important Items to Know Before Purchasing a VoIP System

Choosing to integrate a VoIP system can translate to great cost-reduction, yet there can be a few limitations to using this type of system. Before isolating VoIP as the most cost-effective solution to communication, you may want to consider these issues:

  • Power Outages - Since VoIP phone systems are internet-based, they require electricity to make calls. To prevent disruptions in phone service in the event of a power outage, you can have a backup system installed in addition to your VoIP system.
  • Packet Loss - Packet loss occurs when there is too much traffic on a computer network. This can result in dropped calls or a static sound in conversations. The best way to avoid packet loss is to make sure your internet connection is sufficient to handle the added calls and faxes. A vendor can run tests to assess this issue.
  • Security Concerns - It is easier to ‘hack’ or eavesdrop on VoIP phone calls than on traditional calls. Vendors provide a litany of security measures to prevent such breaches. Make sure you and your vendor have discussed security needs, especially in industries dealing with credit card or account numbers. Because VoIP is not geographically bounded, some businesses rely on a backup landline for emergencies so that aid comes to the correct location. Vendors also offered E911 or Enhanced 911, a feature that allows call tracking for 911 calls.
