VoIP Continues to Increase Its Presence Worldwide

More and more businesses and individuals are dialing up a better ability to communicate with the expansion of VoIP offerings worldwide.

News comes that more than three million Econet Wireless Zimbabwe Ltd subscribers will now have the ability to make less expensive International calls using phones, tablets and computers via the Internet, after the telecommunications company launched voice-over Internet protocol (Voip) services recently.

Speaking at the recent launch, the company’s commercial director, George Barbaressos, stated the country presently has six Voip service providers including PowerTel, Gigatel, Econet, Brodacom and Africom.

According to Barbaressos, challenges for Voip services involved high installation expense, unavailability of lines, poor network coverage and infrastructure that is continuing to age. As Barbaressos sees it, “The Voip service is cost effective. They can connect to all networks and use the existing Internet service providers’ infrastructure.”

Among the service features are international calls, voicemails, call transfers and call waiting. Voip can be utilized on laptops, phones and tablets however customers would get new sim cards for the service.

The company indicated there will be a pair of main packages in the actual product offering - VoIP @Work and VoIP @Home.

The @Work package will provide either desk IP phones that connect to the Econet broadband network, Virtual (or soft) PBX, or the last option a physical IPBX at the business premises.

The @Home option is much the same only this time users can connect through any device that’s connected to the internet like one’s personal computer, mobile phone, tablet or other such. Users will need what they call a SIP client, which are available all over the internet for free (Nimbuzz, Fring, X-Lite are among the options).
